Head to the Tauranga waterfront this King’s Birthday weekend for a free evening of colour, energy and play!
Across three nights, the waterfront will light up with two large-scale lighting installations, fire performances, neon face painting, photobooth, and surprise encounters with luminous roaming characters. You'll also have the chance to try your own circus skill with Have a Glow Circus! Make a night of it by exploring our delicious eateries, stopping in for dinner or dessert, and enjoying live music throughout the city centre. Free, fun and family friendly – don’t miss this the bold lights and bright nights along the waterfront this long weekend. Celebrate Matariki with two special events on Tuesday, 7 July—marking the Māori New Year
Join us in Waihirere (Red Square) from 12:00–12:30pm for a vibrant kapa haka performance by Te Tohu Paetahi students from the University of Waikato. Following this, enjoy a free public lecture on Matariki and Hautapu, presented by Associate Professor Ngairo Eruera, from 12:30–1:30pm at the University of Waikato Tauranga campus, 101 Durham Street. *The public lecture is free, please register your attendance here*. We look forward to welcoming you to celebrate Matariki with us as we honour this special time in the heart of the city.
Come journey through Downtown Tauranga and find the whetū (stars) of Matariki!
Start the trail at any of the awesome locations 3-10th July around Downtown Tauranga (locations to be announced soon!). Scan the QR code with your phone camera and follow the trail to learn more about the Matariki constellation. Once you have completed the trail you will go in the draw to win cool prizes from city centre businesses. This is a family friendly activity for the whole whanau to enjoy.
