A Winter Series: An Introduction to Art History

Dr. Penelope Jackson is back this winter at Toi Tauranga Art Gallery for her four-part introduction to art history lecture series, An Introduction to Art History, on Wednesdays, 10 Jun–1 Jul 2026, 5.30–7.00pm.
Ticket price is for all four lectures. City parking is free after 5pm.
Please note this is the same lecture series that was presented in 2025 at the University of Waikato.

Dr. Penelope Jackson
Former Toi Tauranga Art Gallery Director and Curator, Dr Penelope Jackson MNZM has published four books about art crime as well as numerous exhibition catalogues and art historical articles. In 2023, she was made a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for her contribution to art crime research and the visual arts. Penelope is an Adjunct Research Associate of Charles Sturt University, Australia. She lives in Tauranga and more recently has curated exhibitions for the National Army Museum, Waiouru, and the New Zealand Portrait Gallery, Wellington.

E tū Ururangi – behold the winds of life, carrying the promise and vitality of Tāwhiri-rangi. Celebrate the rising of Matariki with a vibrant day of connection, creativity, and remembrance at Te Ao Mārama - Tauranga Library. Bring your whānau along for a day filled with hands-on activities and rich cultural experiences. Try your hand at raranga (weaving), create your own contemporary mini tukutuku panel, shape a clay taonga, join our history hunt, and learn the basics of poi. Enjoy the beautiful sounds of taonga pūoro and uplifting waiata shared throughout the day.
