Leading pounamu artist, Lewis Tamihana Gardiner (Te Arawa, Ngāti Awa, Te Whānau-ā-Apanui, Ngāi Tahu), will be exhibiting at Tauranga Art Gallery this winter.
Gardiner is considered a leading contemporary figure in jade carving; known for his ability to produce work on a large scale as well as smaller intricate items. Gardiner is attracted to working with jade for its solidity, beauty and ancestral connection. He is based in Rotorua and graduated in 1994 from the Waiariki Institute of Technology in Māori Craft and Design. Lewis has been the recipient of the Mana Pounamu Award for Contemporary Māori Design multiple times and in 2003, he spent time in China with a master jade carver.
