Crowns and Kings: Handel

Event description:

The Scholars bring back NZBarok for this performance of Handel's "Dixit Dominus" and "Coronation Anthems" which bookend the great baroque master's career.

Written in 1707 while Handel was just a fearless student in Italy, "Dixit Dominus" is full of the energy, creativity and the vision of the young man. By contrast, the "Coronation Anthems" show the seasoned composer's gift for grand ceremonial music. Written for the Coronation of George II, they constitute Handel's first royal commission in England. So popular is the first anthem, "Zadok the Priest" that it has been performed at the coronation of every British monarch since its composition.
